Lufthansa Airline – Business Class Review

(oops, I thought I hit send for this review from earlier last year)

I took my first Lufthansa Business Class flights when heading back home to DC from Dubai. From Dubai I had a stopover in Munich then onto Dulles. This was part of a longer trip which stated out in Belgium, The Netherlands and Jordan before Dubai.

If you’ve not tried a long-haul business or first class flight I highly suggest you give it a try. I sacrifice and save up my points until I have enough because it makes a real difference when you have more than three hours on a flight.

As a Business Class ticket holder you normally receive access to the business class lounge so the experience begins long before you step on the flight. If you are like me you are pretty much exhausted from the “vacation” and you stroll around the airport to do a little duty free shopping before heading to the lounge. The lounge usually has a very nice set up of wine, beer and spirits along with some type of food buffet and wifi. Careful not to overdo it as you will want to save your appetite for the flight.

I pretty much like to board as soon as I can to start the experience and get comfy. The drinks come right away and I usually start on a movie and snack during boarding. A lot of airlines allow you to preorder your meals and when possible I like to take advantage of this option. Pre-ordering is helpful because sometimes even Business Class runs out of certain entree’s. Make sure to save room for dessert and dessert wines or cognac. After all of this it’s really hard to keep my eyes open, especially with the option of lay flat seats. Can you tell I am trying to make you jealous? Well I think I paid about $250 US RT by using my airline points. I am not sure who is able to pay 7k for a full fare seat.

I am here to tell you that all the wonderful things I’ve heard about Lufthansa are true. The product was outstanding and the crew operated like a well-oiled German machine.

The first flight to Munich was short, less than 3 hours on the A330-300. Although listed as an A330-300, the last leg was upgraded to a newer product but it wasn’t the aircraft with the upper level though. I was seated in the small business class section behind first class with the 2-2-2 configuration. There are only two  rows and I was seated in the middle section. Normally I prefer a window seat but it was nice to have isle access and not have to worry about disturbing anyone when you need to move about.

When booking, I wasn’t sure if I’d made the right choice of selecting the smaller cabin but I think I actually preferred this location. It felt private and I was getting served quickly since there were only two rows. Also not much of any passenger traffic since its behind first class. I don’t think there was anyone in the First Class cabin and when I passed through I didn’t see a huge bit of difference.

The bathroom on this flight was about three times as large as any other business class product I’ve seen. Not any more stylish, just spacious. Larger vanity and mirror and nice toiletries.

So far I’ve tried the following long haul business class products:

1. Lufthansa
2. Swiss Air
3. Air Canada
4. United
5. Thai Airway
6. Turkish Airlines
7. Royal Jordanian (short-haul)

I’ve listed the airlines in order of overall personal preference. For instance, Turkish Air had the best food and lounge in Istanbul hands down but the crew and product was very mediocre. I ranked Air Canada high because I really appreciated their single seating pods but overall it reminded me a lot of United’s product. Click on the airline to see my reviews.

The Lufthansa attendants are real pros instantly putting me at ease without being overly polite. Yes, it’s possible to be overly polite to the point where it does not seem genuine. They had a specific routine that I’ve not experienced on any other airline. The attendants worked the cabin in a pair, one on each isle. They mirrored one another in that they walked to the front together, made a pivot together and started with the service which seemed like a rehearsed routine. Personally I appreciated this as you don’t have folks running back and forth up and down the aisles during service with the chit-chat.

The food was great, and my wine cup was overflowing. The entertainment was outstanding and I didn’t want to sleep because there were so many movies I wanted to watch. I felt safe and pampered and the seats are very good.

Now that I think about it, I’ve got no complaints at all. Well maybe one, I wish the flight had been longer!

I would gladly pick Lufthansa again.
